Councilmembers continued an ongoing discussion of a proposal known as DORA at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting. DORA stands for “Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area.” If passed, it would allow adults 21 and older to purchase alcoholic beverages from approved vendors and carry them within the boundaries of the downtown map above.

State law has allowed DORAs in Indiana communities since July 2023. For an explanation of the rules and process to establish a DORA, please see the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission website.

Huntington is weighing an approach that differs from the 20 Indiana communities with established DORAs and several others considering them. Local ordinance 9-C-24, if it ultimately passes, would create a DORA district effective only during specified special events and dates.
