Construction crews working at Lafontaine and State will briefly close the bridge and intersection early on the morning of Thursday, September 19. If you normally use the Lafontaine bridge, please use Jefferson, Briant or Broadway instead.
The bridge is expected to reopen by the weekend after crews have removed asphalt in the intersection. This is one of the final steps for prep work that will allow them to start repaving Lafontaine.
Concrete will be poured as soon as Saturday, September 21, for new curbs along Lafontaine. Sidewalk and driveway entrance reconstruction will also begin shortly. Asphalt work to resurface Lafontaine will begin once the new curbs have cured and set. While we are getting close to finishing the sewer installation’s Lafontaine phase, we expect it to be several weeks before Lafontaine is ready for vehicle traffic.
The next phase of sewer installation will focus on the stretch of Tipton between Lafontaine and Division. Please be reminded that this is a large-scale project that involves excavating deep trenches through up to 30 feet of limestone and bedrock.
Due to the arduous nature of the work at hand, it will likely take several months to complete the sewer installation along Tipton. While we share the frustration of rough gravel sections and missing sidewalks, making repairs prior to upcoming sewer work would result in them being torn back up again in a short time. Driving at slower speeds or finding an alternate route may be the best solution in the meantime.
Again, thank you to our community for your patience as we continue these essential Long-Term Control Plan improvements. This work, required by federal law, will eliminate the combined sewer overflows in Huntington’s century-old system that can spill polluted wastewater into rivers and streams during heavy rainfall or snowmelt.
