HUNTINGTON – An Indiana Department of Natural Resources Lake and River Enhancement Program grant for up to $70,000 will back a 2025 streambank stabilization project for a section of the Little River in downtown Huntington.

The City of Huntington announced the award on Thursday, July 18. The grant will cover 80 percent of the project cost, up to $70,000, for design and construction costs.

A 750-foot section of the Little River’s southern bank between the Erie Rail Trail Bridge and Briant Street will be the project area. Initial plans call for converting the bank from a 1:1 slope to a 4:1 slope, extending about 30 feet from the river’s edge.

Soil in the adjacent Erie Heritage Park will be graded and seeded to protect the bank and prevent future erosion. Estimates are that more than 2,300 cubic yards of soil will need to be moved to complete the grading.

The City expects related permits to be issued by winter 2024. A contractor will be selected through a competitive bidding process in early to mid-2025, with work projected to begin next summer.

Questions about the project should be directed to the Community Development & Redevelopment Office at (260) 356-5146.
