Following months of sewer installation work related to the Long-Term Control Plan, Lafontaine Street reopened on November 6, 2024, with a rebuilt road surface and new sidewalks.

Lafontaine Street reopened on Wednesday evening between Tipton Street and the bridge. While the sewer installation project still has a ways to go, we’re glad to have street surfaces, curbs and sidewalks completed and newly planted trees on this portion of the Long-Term Control Plan route!

Next, be on the lookout this coming week as related work begins at the Byron and Market intersection. Crews will be replacing an underground structure that regulates storm and sewer overflow during heavy rain events. This will likely take several weeks.

Also, a second crew will continue sewer work on Tipton Street between Oak and Lafontaine streets. As a reminder, this is a major construction project that requires digging deep trenches to install the new sanitary sewer line. We are undertaking this work to meet important state and federal obligations, as Huntington’s century-old storm and sewer system was originally designed to overflow directly into local rivers during heavy rainfall or snowmelt.

When complete, the full work route will also benefit from rebuilt streets and new sidewalks.
