The City of Huntington renewed its annual agreement this week with the Huntington County Humane Society. Here’s a look at the benefits and services that city residents receive through this partnership.
Prevent-a-Litter Program
PAL for short, this is a financial assistance and veterinary access program available to Huntington City and County residents. Any unaltered cat – whether indoor, outdoor, owned or feral – can be brought in for low-cost spay/neuter procedures and rabies vaccinations.
Since January 2023, 720 cats have been spayed or neutered. As a result, there have been 31 percent fewer cats coming into the shelter and 51 percent fewer animal control calls. Translation: PAL works!
Public Clinic
Offered in 2024 for the first time, a Public Clinic gave City and County residents access to vaccinations for their pets, microchipping, dewormers, nail trimming and other services at a low cost. Nearly 200 pets received one or more services last year. Watch for the Humane Shelter to share details on upcoming clinics.
24/7 Animal Control Response
Two full-time Animal Control officers provide around-the-clock response to concerns both within City limits and across the County.
Welfare Checks
Residents can call Public Safety Dispatch at (260) 356-7110, send an anonymous tip to local law enforcement or contact the Humane Shelter directly via Facebook Messenger.
Animal Control officers respond to all reported concerns to complete a report and provide any necessary follow-up actions.
