The Huntington Fire Department will do its part by teaming up with Kroger this Saturday for a Firefighters Fighting Hunger food drive. Local firefighters will be at the Huntington Kroger location from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. September 13 to accept non-perishable donations.

The Huntington Fire Department broke ground on the new Flaxmill Road fire station on Tuesday afternoon, following a City Council vote on August 26 giving the project final approval.

The City acquired the abandoned brownfield site in 2014, working in a phased approach since to remediate asbestos and other known contaminants at the site.

Led by an all-local board of directors, non-profit Flint Creek Redevelopment LLC’s vision is to acquire and rehabilitate Downtown buildings, making much-needed and often long-overdue renovations that will support vibrant, long-term commercial and residential use.

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun held a ceremonial signing of Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 306 at Huntington University on Thursday, July 17. SEA 306 is now in effect in Indiana, benefitting Hoosier creatives in the film and media industry. The bill was authored by State Senators Andy Zay, Travis Holdman and Kyle Walker.

Each year, City Utilities opens fire hydrants throughout Huntington and allows water to run through the pipes. The hydrant flushing program is essential to the maintenance of the city’s water system.

On Wednesday, about two dozen representatives from potential environmental and demolition partners toured the site, a required step before submitting bids. The City will open those bids at the Board of Public Works & Safety meeting on July 7.

Crews will install a new sewer main (at about 30 feet deep) that must cross Jefferson to connect at Byron. It’s an essential but challenging part of the project that will impact traffic for a couple of months.
