The Market and First intersection will close for about three weeks starting September 23, 2024

Starting the afternoon of Monday, September 23, contractors working for the City will close the intersection of First and Market streets for about three weeks.

A manhole beneath the intersection and equipment to regulate, measure and record combined sewer overflows will be replaced. Also called CSOs, these incidents spill wastewater into nearby rivers and streams during heavy rain through outfall pipes designed decades ago to prevent backups. The major construction that has impacted Lafontaine and Tipton streets this year is designed to limit and reduce these incidents per state and federal mandates.

The timing of the First and Market street work has been moved up while we wait for AT&T to catch up on utility pole relocations along Tipton Street. Underground sewer work has been completed up to the Lafontaine and Tipton intersection, and crews have proceeded east on Tipton Street as far as they can for now.

Additional Long-Term Control Plan updates at this time include:

  • Four-way red flashing signals have been turned back on at the Park and Lafontaine intersection to slow traffic and reduce dust in the area.
  • Within the next few days, construction crews will begin pouring new concrete curbs on Lafontaine Street. Sidewalks and driveway approaches will be done immediately after, followed by Lafontaine Street’s resurfacing.
